The problem access control actually solves

A lock tells you nothing. When someone leaves the company, you either trust that they returned every key or you change the cylinder. When something goes missing overnight, a key-based building cannot tell you who was inside. Access control replaces both problems with a list of credentials you control and a log you can read.

Credentials you can revoke

A lost card is deactivated from the software in seconds. A lost key is a locksmith visit and new keys for everyone who had one. This single difference is why most businesses move over.

Entry logging

Every read is recorded with time and credential. When a stock discrepancy appears on Monday, you have something factual to work from rather than a discussion.

Time-based access

Cleaners at fixed hours, contractors during a project window, staff on their shift only. Access can expire on a date without anyone remembering to remove it.

Zones within a building

Not everyone needs the server room, the stock room or the accounts office. Access is granted per door, not per building.

Integration with alarm and CCTV

Disarming the alarm on a valid card read, and tagging CCTV footage at the moment a door opened, so the two systems corroborate each other.

Reader types and where each fits

Card and fob

The workhorse. Cheap to issue, easy to replace, and users understand it immediately. The weakness is that cards get shared and lent, which is fine for a stock room and not fine for a payroll office.

PIN keypad

No credential to lose and nothing to issue. The weakness is the opposite of cards: codes get passed around and rarely changed, so on its own it suits low-sensitivity doors.

Fingerprint

Cannot be lent or lost, which makes it the right choice where the log needs to mean something, such as attendance or a restricted area. Worth knowing that dusty, wet or heavily manual work environments cause read failures, so a card fallback is usually specified alongside it.

Face recognition

Contactless and fast at busy entrances. Costs more per door and needs consistent lighting to perform, which is a positioning decision made at survey.

Mobile credential

The phone becomes the card. Convenient and easy to issue remotely, though it depends on staff having a compatible phone and being willing to install an app.

Combination

Card plus PIN, or card plus fingerprint, on the doors that justify it. Most buildings use a mix rather than one type everywhere.

The lock matters as much as the reader

Most access control complaints are about the locking hardware, not the reader. The reader is the part people notice; the lock is the part that fails, jams, or turns out to be illegal on a fire escape route.

Magnetic lock

Strong and common on glass and timber doors. Releases when power is cut, which is what you want on an escape route.

Electric strike

Fits the existing door frame and keeps the mechanical lock in place. Neater on timber doors where a mag lock would look bulky.

Drop bolt

Used on sliding and swing doors where the frame will not take a mag lock.

Fire egress

Exit buttons, break-glass release and fail-safe behaviour so nobody is trapped by a door during an evacuation or a power failure.

Common access control questions

What happens during a power cut?

Doors on escape routes are specified fail-safe, meaning they release when power is lost. The controller runs on a backup battery so the system keeps logging and keeps working through short outages. Fail-safe versus fail-secure is decided per door at the survey.

Can it handle staff attendance?

Most systems export entry logs that can be used for attendance. Whether that is enough depends on your payroll process, so tell us at the survey if attendance is a requirement rather than a bonus.

How many doors can one system run?

From a single door upward. What changes with scale is the controller and whether the software is local or networked, which is why we ask about future doors before specifying.

Can I add doors later?

Yes, if the controller was specified with headroom. Buying the smallest possible controller saves a little now and costs more when the second door arrives.

Do you install in condominiums?

Yes for unit doors and private offices. Anything affecting common areas needs management or JMB approval first.

How long does installation take?

A single door is typically half a day. A multi-door networked system with software setup and credential enrolment takes longer and is planned around your working hours.

What warranty do I get?

Our installation work carries a one-month warranty. Readers, controllers and locks are covered under the manufacturer terms for the brand supplied, stated on the quote.

What drives the cost

Access control is priced per door rather than per building, so the scope you set at the survey is the scope you pay for. These are the factors that move the figure.

Number of controlled doors

The main driver. Each door needs a reader, a lock, an exit button and cabling back to the controller.

Reader technology

Card and PIN readers sit at the bottom of the range, fingerprint in the middle, face recognition at the top.

Locking hardware

Magnetic locks, electric strikes and drop bolts differ in price and in how much fitting work the door needs.

Standalone or networked

A standalone door with credentials enrolled at the reader is the cheapest option. Networked systems with central software cost more and are the only sensible choice past a few doors.

Cable runs and containment

Distance from each door back to the controller, and whether cabling can be concealed or needs trunking through a finished office.

Credential count

Cards and fobs are per user. A hundred staff is a real line item, and it recurs as people join and leave.

Integration

Linking to alarm or CCTV adds configuration time, and occasionally an interface module.

Work out which doors actually need controlling

We walk the building, ask who needs to go where, and specify only the doors that justify it. Most offices need fewer controlled doors than they expect.
