How a home solar system works
Panels on the roof generate DC electricity. An inverter converts it to AC for the house. Whatever you do not use flows back to the grid and is credited against your bill under Net Energy Metering. There is no battery in a standard NEM setup, which surprises people: the grid is doing the storing.
Panels
Mounted on rails fixed to the roof structure, angled and positioned to avoid shading from water tanks, parapets and neighbouring buildings. Panel count follows the system size, and roof space is often the real constraint rather than budget.
Inverter
The component that determines how well the system performs and the one most likely to need attention over its life. Sized to the array, not oversized for a future expansion you may never do.
Metering and NEM
A bidirectional meter records import and export. Credits offset your consumption on the bill rather than paying out as cash.
Monitoring
An app showing generation, consumption and export. Worth checking monthly, because a quiet drop in output is how a fault goes unnoticed for a year.
Roof and structure
Tile, metal deck and concrete all mount differently. We check roof condition first, because installing over a roof due for replacement means paying to remove and refit the array.
Sizing the system honestly
The most common mistake in residential solar is buying a bigger system than the household consumes. Under NEM you are offsetting your own usage, so a system that generates far more than you use is capital sitting on your roof earning very little.
Start from twelve months of bills
Not one month. Malaysian consumption swings with the weather and school holidays, and a single bill from a hot month will oversize the system.
When you use power matters
Solar generates in the middle of the day. A household that is empty until seven in the evening benefits differently from one with someone home and air-conditioning running at noon.
Usable roof area
Shading, orientation and obstructions usually cut the theoretical roof area substantially. This often caps the system before your budget does.
Tariff block matters
Malaysian domestic tariffs are tiered, so the savings come disproportionately from shaving the most expensive top blocks of your usage. This is why a modest system on a high bill can pay back faster than a large system on a low one.
Payback, not just cost
The question worth asking is how many years until the system pays for itself at your consumption. Any installer quoting a payback figure without seeing a year of your bills is guessing.
Batteries are a separate decision
Batteries add cost and are about backup during outages, not about saving more under NEM. Decide on solar first, batteries later if outages are a real problem where you live.
What the process looks like
Solar takes longer than our other installations, because approval sits between the quote and the switch-on. The installation itself is the short part.
Survey and bill review
Roof inspection, shading check, and twelve months of bills to size the array.
Quote and design
System size, panel layout, inverter spec and an estimated payback based on your own consumption.
NEM application
Submitted on your behalf. This stage is the longest and is outside our control.
Installation
Mounting, wiring and inverter commissioning, typically a small number of days depending on system size.
Meter change and switch-on
The utility installs the bidirectional meter, then the system goes live and monitoring is set up with you.
Common solar questions
Will solar work during a blackout?
A standard NEM system shuts down during an outage for the safety of grid workers. Backup during outages requires a battery and hybrid inverter, which is a separate specification and cost.
Does rain or cloud stop generation?
It reduces it rather than stopping it. Malaysian systems are sized with local weather patterns already built into the expected annual output.
Do panels need cleaning?
Occasionally. Rain handles most of it, but dust and bird droppings accumulate, particularly on lower-pitched roofs. A visible drop in monitored output is the signal.
Can my roof take the weight?
Most can, but we check. Older roofs, or roofs due for replacement within a few years, should be dealt with before installation rather than after.
What if I sell the house?
The system stays with the property. The NEM agreement is transferred to the new owner, which is handled as part of the sale.
Can you install solar and CCTV at the same time?
What warranty applies?
Our installation work carries a one-month warranty. Panels and inverters carry their own manufacturer warranties, which are considerably longer and stated on the quote.
What drives the cost of a solar system
Solar is quoted per system size rather than per panel, but several site factors move the figure independently of size. Detailed cost breakdown sits on our solar panel price page.
System size
The main driver. Cost per unit of capacity generally falls as the system grows, which is why a system half the size is not half the price.
Roof type and pitch
Metal deck is the most straightforward. Tile takes longer and needs more care. Flat concrete needs a ballasted or angled frame, which adds material.
Roof height and access
Double-storey and three-storey properties need more access equipment and time than a single-storey roof.
Distance from roof to DB
A long cable run from the array to the distribution board adds cable and labour, and is easy to overlook when comparing quotes.
Inverter choice
String inverters are the standard. Microinverters or optimisers cost more and are justified when parts of the roof are shaded at different times of day.
Whether a battery is included
The single largest optional addition, and the one that changes the payback calculation most.
