An alarm does something CCTV cannot
Cameras document. An alarm interrupts. If someone forces a window at two in the morning, CCTV gives you footage the next day; an alarm gives you a siren, a phone alert and an intruder who leaves. Most properties that need one need both, doing different jobs.
Perimeter detection
Magnetic contacts on doors, gates, windows and grilles trigger the moment something opens. This is the layer that catches an intruder at the boundary rather than inside the house, and it is the layer most often left out to save cost.
Motion detection
PIR sensors covering hallways, stairs and open-plan areas. Pet-immune models are available and worth specifying if you have animals, or the system will be switched off within a week.
Siren and strobe
An internal siren to make staying inside unbearable, and an external siren or strobe so neighbours know which house it is.
Phone alerts
Push notifications when a zone triggers, when the system is armed or disarmed, and when a sensor battery is low. You can also see who disarmed it and when.
Panic button
A fixed or wireless button that triggers the alarm immediately, without the entry delay. Common in shops and in bedrooms of larger properties.
Getting the zones right
A badly zoned alarm is worse than none, because it gets disabled. Almost every abandoned alarm we are called to was set up without thinking about how the household actually moves.
Home mode and away mode
Away arms everything. Home arms only the perimeter, so you can walk to the kitchen at night without setting off a siren. If a system only has one mode, it stops being used the first weekend someone is home.
Entry and exit delay
Enough time to get in and disarm, short enough to be useful. Too long and an intruder simply walks in during the countdown.
Pets and ceiling fans
Both cause false triggers if sensors are placed carelessly. Sensor height, angle and model selection fix it, which is a survey decision rather than a fitting-day one.
Wired or wireless sensors
Wired is more reliable but needs cabling. Wireless suits finished houses and rented units, with batteries lasting a year or two and the panel warning you before they die.
Power and internet loss
The panel carries a backup battery so a cut supply does not disarm the property. Alerts need internet, but the siren does not.
Who gets the alert
More than one person, ideally. A system that only notifies someone who travels is a system nobody responds to.
Homes, shops and offices
The hardware is similar; the thinking is not. A home is protected against entry while people sleep or travel. A business is protected after hours, and also needs to know who disarmed it in the morning, which is where access control starts to matter.
Terrace and semi-D
Perimeter contacts on all ground-floor openings, motion on the stairs, home mode for overnight.
Bungalow
More zones and often an external siren, because distance from neighbours reduces the chance anyone hears an internal one.
Shop or office
Panic button, after-hours arming schedule, and arm/disarm logging so you know who opened up.
Common alarm questions
Will my pets set it off?
Not if the system is specified for them. Pet-immune PIR sensors ignore movement below a weight and height threshold. Tell us about animals at the survey, including how large they are and whether they climb furniture.
Does the alarm call the police?
Not automatically. It sounds the siren and alerts your phone. Whether to escalate is your decision, which is deliberate, since most triggers turn out to be a family member who forgot the code.
What happens during a power cut?
The panel runs on backup battery and stays armed. Phone alerts pause if the internet is also down, but the siren still sounds.
Can I add sensors later?
Yes. Wireless sensors pair to the existing panel, so extending to a new extension or a room you previously skipped does not mean replacing the system.
How long does installation take?
A wireless system for a terrace house is usually half a day to a day. Wired systems and larger premises take longer because of the cabling.
Can it work with my CCTV?
Yes. We often set an alarm trigger to mark the CCTV recording at that moment, so you are not scrubbing through hours of footage looking for the event.
What warranty do I get?
Our installation work carries a one-month warranty. Panels and sensors are covered under the manufacturer terms for the brand supplied, stated on the quote.
What drives the cost of an alarm system
Alarm pricing is mostly a function of how many openings you protect and whether the sensors are wired. Understanding the drivers lets you decide where to spend and where a cheaper choice costs you nothing.
Number of protected openings
Every door, window and grille you want contacted is a sensor. This is the largest single variable, and the one people underestimate on double-storey houses.
Wired or wireless
Wireless costs less to install because there is no cabling or making good. Wired costs more up front and removes battery replacement from your life.
Panel capability
A basic panel with a keypad sits well below one with app control, arm and disarm logging, and multiple user codes.
Pet-immune sensors
A modest premium per sensor, and worth paying wherever an animal roams, because the alternative is a system nobody arms.
External siren and strobe
An added item, usually specified for bungalows, corner lots and business premises rather than mid-terrace homes.
Integration with other systems
Linking the alarm to your CCTV or smart home setup adds configuration time but no hardware in most cases.
